Description

Go beyond the myths of the American South at Laura Plantation, where intimate, firsthand accounts explore the lives of four generations of one Louisiana Creole family, both free and enslaved. Laura’s new, permanent exhibit examines in biographical detail the lives of Africans on the plantation, from enslavement into the 20th century.

Discover the history of Duparc Sugar Plantation, originally called l'Habitation Duparc, later renamed Laura Plantation. Founded in 1804 by French naval veteran Guillaume Duparc, the estate grew to 12,000 acres. The manor house, built by skilled enslaved workers, was constructed using local materials and featured vibrant colors. The plantation included slave quarters, a small sugar mill, and orchards. It was divided into the "front" by the river and the "back" where enslaved laborers lived. The Mississippi River and a levee provided natural protection, with orchards and a pier for river access.

Laura Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM except for major holidays. The first tour of the day begins at 10AM with tours beginning approximately every 40 minutes thereafter until the last tour of the day at 4:00 PM.
